Age: 21

Personality:
Do you need an unassuming friend? Loyal, sweet, and compassionate? Luigi's your man. He's about the kindest from Mushroom Kingdom, unable to say a mean word, even when he tries! He's about as intimidating as a kitten and mewls like one, too! Oh, he has tried, he has, to be scary and powerful and all that, but it's pretty far reaching for him, as his hands quiver and his gaze shifts to the floor ever briefly. Even his glare seems nothing short of ridiculously adorable, so if you have Luigi mad at you, it wouldn't in the least bit be frightening, because he doesn't know the first thing about standing all tough.
Coming with his inherent niceness is his sensitivity. It's easy for him to get upset and offended every which way, and it's likely why he shies away from company more oft than not. The truth of the matter is, he's easily startled and frightened, easily taken advantage of, and easily walked all over. He can't help it; at times, he's rather spineless, not wanting to disagree with anyone, not wanting to come into conflict... he's not one for a good rumble, no. Maybe his brother, but certainly not him. He'd rather we all just get along. Because hurt really hurts and he's not fond of hurt, oh no, he'd rather be safe, safe with those who will treat him with patience and not mind it when he stutters or when he's unable to say anything for fear of disapproval.
That's not to say that Luigi can't summon up bravery in times of need. His mansion, for example: when Mario was trapped, he brought all he had into the fray. He's deathly afraid of ghosts, yes, and the dark, and creepy mansions, but doggone it, he's not going to leave his brother there! And indeed, as of late, especially with that Chaos Heart experience (Super Paper Mario), he has been able to crawl out of his shell more and more, mainly because he's realized how much use he is for Mario and for the people that he wishes to help (as a "Daring Defender", perhaps self-dubbed). When people need him, although he may prefer to hang back for just a little while, he doesn't mind heading out on an adventure of his own if it means assisting those who care for him and about him. This also applies to his social life; over time, he has inched away from holing himself up at the house and allowed some openness and clarity of heart to make those close connections that he so desperately needs to feel validated. Shadow, for example, is a good friend of his, one he's met at the Olympic Games, and despite how intimidating the hedgehog may appear at first glance, Luigi's been able to grow comfortable in his presence.
A big foundation of this one's personality comes from Mario. Indeed, he idolizes his older brother, wishing to follow in his footsteps and become a brave hero like him. Sometimes, he's a little jealous of the recognition that he receives when Luigi himself has been able to achieve similar, and he does feel downtrodden when a Toad mocks him for his apparent inability to collect one hundred twenty Stars (Super Mario 64 DS). Still, he doesn't let that get in the way of their relationship, and it's healthy and loving in the brotherly sense, a strong bond of agape. Most of what comes out of his mouth when talking about his brother is praise, and he misses him greatly whenever he goes on an adventure without him tagging along. He can be a bit clingy, in fact, and it's no wonder why; when he's with Mario, he feels more confident, more intelligent, and more on top of what he needs to do. That doesn't mean he never has issues with him, but whatever ones they have tend to be resolved and he gets along with him more often than not.
Another part of Luigi that is seldom seen unless one gets to know him: his romanticism. He can be quite the wide eyed idealist, which gives him some form of naivety -- thankfully, this weakness is often covered by Mario, who is a bit more intuitive. This idealism bleeds into other aspects of himself, making him into a creative soul who craves beauty. He likes to dance, he likes to sing, he likes music. He's passionate about the 'pretty' and the 'elegant', but this is often closeted because it's a side-note to what's actually important. He's unafraid to show it when he's given the opportunity, however, because he finds little importance in pride and places that energy more in being able to show others how bright the world can be. Perhaps it's this fondness for the sparkling that makes him so darn optimistic, able to look to the bright side even in the dusk. His belief that his elder brother can do anything ties into this, and it's because of this optimism that he's rarely upset for long, ready and rearing to go for the next day and not so focused on the dark and stormy clouds of yesteryear. That doesn't mean that he doesn't display some form of caution, in comparison to the hastier older who's able to rush straight into a battle without thinking twice, but he's confident that things will work out in the end, despite how hopeless they may seem at first glance.
That doesn't mean Luigi is free of the ability to use sarcasm. Oh, no. He can be quite picky with household decor, and he's able to see where reality stinks. In his adventures in the mansion, he often critiqued and picked at furniture that already was located within the building, and he hasn't lost that trait. He's a little quieter about it than some others may be, though. He prefers to look on the bright side, and while he's able to toss in a healthy dose of sarcasm, it isn't his automatic way of dealing with things.
Finally, Luigi is modest. Very modest. He's been forced to be, though, over times of being told that he's weaker than Mario. He's decided to become a self-fulfilling prophecy, sometimes belittling himself and his ability (and sometimes even using it as an excuse not to go on adventures because of how afraid he is). Sure, sometimes he can spin entertaining tales of how brave and confident he was in one adventure and he can be perceived as arrogant, but in reality when told he's this-and-this he's more inclined to deny than to answer, "Yeah, I know." Sometimes he questions whether he amounts to anything and accepts that he will be a 'loser', even though he really isn't one. Have you forgotten his name? "No problem," he often says, "people forget it all the time. I'm used to it." That isn't to say he always takes it lying down. Sometimes he snaps, because his name is LUIGI, LUIGI, NOT MR. GREENIE, LUIGI. But these moments don't last long and he finds them regrettable in the end.
In short, Luigi is a kind, modest individual with an obsession with beauty and perfection who's able to have the courage of a lion but, most of the time, is gentle and fragile -- so be careful or you might break him.

As for how he got into Smash? Likely just stumbled there. No, really. He's gone to some odd places doing that very thing. Daisy went missing and he went off to look, and somehow ended up here. Yep, that's it.
